JOURNALISTIC STANDARDS

We believe that ethical journalism is not just a professional responsibility but an act of empathy and leadership, a way to foster understanding and drive meaningful social change. Our vision and mission is to build a platform that amplifies youth voices, highlights social and cultural challenges, and fosters meaningful dialogue that leads to understanding and action.

At The 44 North, our mission is to inform, inspire, and empower the next generation through balanced, independent media that prioritizes truth, empathy, and action.

We engage thoughtfully, but unflinchingly, with complex issues related to youth mental health, politics, and social justice. Through our magazine, podcast (Life Outside the Box), live events, and digital platforms, we strive to create a media space that is both courageous and compassionate, where mental well-being, inclusion, and social awareness are foundational to storytelling.

We believe journalism and storytelling can work together as catalysts for empathy, resilience, and progress. The 44 North exists to listen, reflect, and lead with integrity — providing space for young people to see themselves represented, respected, and heard.

1. Integrity and Independence

2. Accuracy and Accountability

We are committed to accuracy, fairness, and transparency. All facts are verified through credible sources, and we avoid speculation or unsubstantiated claims. If errors occur, we correct them promptly, publicly, and with clear explanation. We welcome feedback and hold ourselves accountable to our readers, listeners, and community partners. Corrections and ethical inquiries can be directed to team@the44northmedia.ca.

3. Diversity, Inclusion, and Representation

We actively seek to include a wide range of voices — across geography, gender, race, culture, and lived experience. Our goal is not only to represent diversity but to build trust with communities whose voices are often underrepresented. We recognize that ethical storytelling requires humility, curiosity, and continuous learning.

4. Transparency and Continuous Improvement

We maintains open dialogue with readers, listeners, and stakeholders. We are committed to continually improving our editorial processes through professional development, consultation with mental health experts, and community feedback. Ethical journalism is not static, it evolves alongside our understanding of empathy, equity, and social responsibility.

5. Partnership Ethics and Transparency

We deeply value collaboration and partnership. However, to maintain credibility and public trust:

• All sponsorship and funding relationships are disclosed.

• Editorial and business operations remain separate.

• We decline funding that would compromise our integrity, independence, or the well-being of our audience.

Partners are encouraged to align with our mission and uphold the same respect for ethical storytelling.

6. Privacy and Source Protection

We prioritize the dignity and privacy of everyone who shares their story with us. When reporting on sensitive issues, particularly those involving youth or mental health, we:

• Obtain informed consent.
• Protect identifying information where necessary.
• Avoid publishing content that could cause distress, harm, or reputational damage.

Confidentiality is respected at every stage of the editorial process.

7. Our Commitment to Partners

We see our funders and partners as collaborators in a shared mission to promote youth mental health and social well-being. By upholding these standards, we ensure that all partnerships are built on trust, transparency, and shared values.

Together, we can support a media landscape that reflects compassion, authenticity, and hope.

• Using accurate, non-stigmatizing language.
