February is celebrated as a time of love, and we like to snuggle in together to keep the cold of winter away. But love isn’t always easy. We learn this in all of the romantic comedies and dramas that show us the pitfalls and challenges of love. What we don’t see as often is that love is not always safe, either. 

For decades, Canadians ignored the undertones of racial bias, homophobia and misogyny. Instead, we engaged in a reverence of Don Cherry that is emblematic of the great Canadian problem as it pertains to social justice, and indeed, truth and reconciliation.

While more awareness is being brought towards the level of sexism in dress codes across North America, there doesn’t seem to be the same level of justice seeking in the online world
